Peter Thompson

Peter Thompson is an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology and a Principal Investigator at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba in the Diabetes Research Envisioned and Accomplished in Manitoba (DREAM) research theme. He completed his Ph.D. in medical genetics (2016) studying stem cell epigenetics at the University of British Columbia and his postdoctoral fellowship training at the University of California San Francisco Diabetes Center (2020), where his work discovered senescence as a novel mechanism and therapeutic target in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Dr. Thompson established his independent research program in 2020, and is funded by CIHR, Breakthrough T1D, Diabetes Canada and NSERC. His lab applies multidisciplinary approaches to study pancreatic islet biology, stress and immunology in development and T1D, with a specific focus on the molecular mechanisms driving T1D and the long-term goal of developing therapies for halting disease progression.
